Director Nanette Burstein recently screened the Sundance award-winning documentary American Teen for our students at the New York Film Academy. The film follows the lives of five teenagers – a jock, a popular girl, a heartthrob, an artsy girl, and a geek – in one small town in Indiana through their senior year of high school. We see the insecurities, the cliques, the jealousies, the first loves and heartbreaks, and the struggle to make profound decisions about the future. It’s in part funny, in part sad, and wholly unforgettable. The use of animation within the context of the documentary to exemplify the inner lives of the characters was applauded by all the students. Director Nanette Burstein and producer Jordan Roberts participated in a Q&A with our students after the screening, and the students were very engaged, making for a very interesting discussion.
