Broadcast Journalism Programs and Workshops
The multimedia journalist (MMJ) is a confident and resourceful storyteller. At NYFA’s Broadcast Journalism School, located at our NYFA New York campus, aspiring journalists prepare for the modern era of evidence-based digital journalism, where news expands across television, web, and social platforms. Founded in collaboration with NBC News, our Broadcast Journalism School takes a hands-on approach of learning by doing through a rigorous progression of real-world projects, as well as academic learning and actual production experience.
In addition to their creative exploration and technical training, our Broadcast Journalism students learn how to apply narrative storytelling to the news, providing them with the unique, transferable skill set necessary to successfully pursue their creative goals in an always-changing industry. Students research, write, shoot, produce, and edit their own stories, learning essential cross-platform nonfiction video, leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills while building a reel that showcases their best work.
As NYFA strives to make education in media, journalism, and the visual arts accessible to the most diverse, international, and broadest spectrum of students, our Broadcast Journalism School is a supportive community where students can collaborate and build lasting connections.
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Entertainment Media
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Entertainment Media at NYFA begins with a robust study in the visual and performing arts before students select a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. This program is complemented by a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum. At the beginning of their studies, students explore various fields of film, media, and entertainment, helping them gain a better understanding of narrative and cinematic storytelling. After selecting the Broadcast Journalism concentration, students narrow their focus, receiving a project-based education that provides students with practical training.
During this advanced study of Broadcast Journalism, students spend a majority of their time creating their own content using industry standard HD and 4K cameras and digital editing software, giving students the framework to learn the production process from start to finish. Throughout the concentration portion of the program, students learn how to work collaboratively in a challenging, creative environment from our news studio. Students learn the ethics and skills that real-world journalists use to tell compelling stories, such as dynamic first-person narratives and highly visual “explainers”. Students study and access the effectiveness of popular digital news sites such as Vice, Vox, BuzzFeed News and Now This, as well as sports and entertainment-driven platforms. BFA students may also tour major network production facilities.
1-Year Broadcast Journalism
Certificate Program
In the 1-Year Broadcast Journalism Certificate Program, students study all aspects of the production process, working collaboratively in a real-world, deadline driven environment from our news studio.
Throughout the program, students create their own content using industry standard HD and 4K cameras and digital editing software, learning the skills associated with personal journalism, including dynamic first-person narratives and highly visual “explainers” like those found on popular digital news sites such as Vice, Vox, BuzzFeed News, and Now This, as well as sports and entertainment-driven platforms. In addition, many one-year students benefit from exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of major network production facilities.
Broadcast Journalism
Workshops
NYFA’s Broadcast Journalism workshops provide a holistic curriculum where students learn how to create memorable stories, working both behind and in front of the camera. These short-term, intensive workshops are ideal for aspiring journalists looking to enhance their visual communication skills or learn how to create engaging cross-platform nonfiction video content. Students can choose from full-time and part-time workshops at our NYFA New York campus.
In this part-time workshop, students learn the essentials of multimedia journalism through hands-on, intensive projects. Students create their own projects, which may include a News Package and an Interview Profile.
